What may be at play
Moments when something falls away.
A turning point rarely announces itself. More often, something has happened — or simply ended — and it only becomes clear months later that it provided direction. Six of these moments recur frequently.
- A company sold, a role handed over, a career concluded — and days that are emptier than expected.
- Children leaving the nest, and a house that feels larger than it was.
- A diagnosis, surgery, a recovery that takes longer than anyone thought.
- A loss that has removed the sense of certainty from the days.
- A relationship that changes or ends, and the question of who you are outside of it.
- Exhaustion that no longer subsides with a holiday.
What these moments have in common: something that gave direction has fallen away, and what replaces it is not yet visible. This is not a problem requiring a solution. It is a period requiring attention.
Most people try to shorten such a period. Understandable, as it is uncomfortable and there is little language for it. But what is to be found in that time cannot be rushed. Personal coaching does not make that period shorter — it makes it navigable, and ensures you do not face it alone.
It took me three years myself, and during that time I primarily learned that forcing things does not help.
What the work does
What is given space.
Personal coaching here is neither therapy nor guidance toward a goal. Nothing is solved that is not relevant. The work consists primarily of attention — slower than usual, and broader than just what is being said.
What that yields is difficult to describe beforehand. In retrospect, people usually mention these three.
In the not-knowing
Uncertainty about what is to come changes from a problem into a period. That sounds like a small difference, yet it is the greatest of the three — because a problem requires a solution, and a period only requires passage.
In the body
What cannot be said is usually carried. Sleep, breath, tension in the shoulders — these often reveal where things stand sooner than words can, and they are taken seriously here.
In what is noticed again
Taste, sound, light, people — in a heavy period, these disappear from view. They do not return because someone searches for them, but because there is space again to notice them.
What it is not: a way to get through something faster. What changes here is not the duration, but whether you go through it alone.
The trajectory
Ten sessions, and the time in between.
Personal coaching follows the same trajectory as the other individual trajectories: ten two-hour sessions, spread over several months in consultation. What differs is not the form, but the subject of the conversation.
You determine the pace yourself. There may be weeks between two sessions, or longer if necessary — that time is not a break but a part of the work. And if something occurs that makes it difficult to continue — a treatment, a period where everything is too much — we interrupt the trajectory instead of pushing through.

Honesty upfront
When something else is more appropriate.
Coaching is not therapy. In coaching, we work with what is present now and with the direction that presents itself. If it concerns trauma, depression, or something requiring a diagnosis, then a psychologist or therapist is the appropriate path — not because it would be too heavy, but because that is a different profession. Sometimes they run alongside each other; that is also possible.
For physical complaints, it starts with the GP. Long-term exhaustion, sleep problems that do not subside, complaints you cannot place — have those investigated first. I know from experience how tempting it is to bypass that, and how much time it takes to reverse it.
It does not replace the people around you. Ten conversations in six months are ten conversations. What friends, family, or a partner do, they do — and if they are few at this moment, that is often the first thing we look at rather than something coaching can solve.
And sometimes it does lie with the work. If the turning point is related to a company you have built, sold, or let go of, then entrepreneurial coaching is often a better fit. If it concerns a role in which you lead others, then that is leadership coaching. The trajectory is the same; the conversation is about something else.

Introduction
You don't need to know anything yet.
Thirty minutes, free of charge, online or in Utrecht. You do not need to have a clear question and there is no obligation. If something else proves more appropriate — a therapist, a doctor, or simply more time — I will say so.
